When I first achieved my First Dan, the way of the sword was my shield. It was a philosophy that helped me feel powerful during a time when I was filled with doubt and facing inner struggles. Learning the intricate details of Siljun Dobup gave me a sense of control and purpose. My First Dan didn’t just teach me how to move; it taught me how to survive, giving me a foundation of strength that I desperately needed to move forward in my life.
As I entered my senior year of high school, that feeling of survival turned into a desire for something much bigger. I no longer just wanted to feel safe—I felt a strong need to occupy more space, both on the mats and in my daily life. I wanted my presence to be felt the moment I stepped into the dojang. This year, I reached a true peak where I have never felt physically or mentally stronger, and I realized that I was ready to stop hiding in the shadows and start commanding the room. This shift in my mindset is exactly what drove me toward my goal of achieving Second Dan in Siljun Dobup. The comfort of a black belt (Dan) can make some people complacent, but it made me hungry for more. I developed a relentless desire to get better, to learn deeper nuances of the art, and to push past my old limits. That hunger to gain more knowledge and perfect my technique became the ultimate fuel for my training.
Looking back at my younger self, I realize how much I have grown. I used to rely on the sword to give me artificial confidence, but today, my confidence is real. It was earned through sweat, repetition, and the refusal to quit. My masters, who have always been father figures to me, helped guide this growth, watching me transform from a student who was just trying to find his footing into a martial artist who stands tall and takes up space.
Passing my Second Dan is a huge milestone, but it is not the end of the road. My senior year of high school showed me exactly what I am capable of when I am completely focused and driven by passion. The way of the sword is no longer just a tool to help me get by; it is my momentum. As I move forward into the next chapter of my life, I will carry this strength with me, always eager to learn more and continue growing as both a warrior and a person.
