In my last essay we discussed Set Soo’s (Water) guiding principle of acceptance. Set Soo’s mindset teaches us to be ourselves by not letting any internal or external influences disturb us as we accept things as they are, not as what we perceive or want them to be.
The intent of Set Poong (Wind) is to act decisively with our full spirit. Once we make a decision that we truly feel is based on integrity we must act and move forward with our complete commitment to such decision. The mind has a tendency to continue to search for answers if we allow it, with Set Poong’s teachings we stop (sever) the ever-searching mind and then make a decision moving forward like a gust of wind with our full spirit. Without action the mind and therefore our lives may become stuck in one place or stagnant as we analyze a situation over and over again.
The tempo of Set Poong reminds me of a breeze on a spring day. Wind is not constant; it moves between stillness and sudden presence. There may be a deep calm all around us, and then without warning a sudden gust passes through. The moment it moves, we immediately know it is there. Similar to how a breeze is refreshing to breathe as it touches our face, so is making a decision and allowing the mind to become unstuck moving us even closer to our next goal in life.
Set Poong is this gentle breeze until action is required. When that moment of action arrives, Set Poong’s movements become quick, alive and decisive. Through, Set Poong I have learned to move forward in life with action rather than allowing a past memory or the fear of the unknown to stop me from progressing.
We have to be active participants in our lives and cannot always wait for something to happen. We must act, set goals and actively meet them, even if it’s something small, such as turning your lights off before leaving for work or making your bed in the morning. We must decide on our course of action and full commit to it with our full spirit and dedication as Set Poong teaches.
